Why should I spay or neuter my pet?

Spaying and neutering is very important to control the pet population. This procedure can be done as early as 6 months of age.
In males, neutering will eliminate the risk of testicular cancer and prostate problems, and reduce aggression and urine-marking behaviors.
In females, spaying will eliminate the risk of developing a pyometra (puss in the uterus) from numerous heat cycles, ovarian cancer and pregnancy, and reduce the chances of mammary (breast) cancer.

Why does my pet need vaccines every year?

The most important part of vaccination is the physical exam that precedes it. The decision on vaccination is based on lifestyle and health information. Vaccinating your pet an on annual basis keeps their immune system healthy. Vaccines are a virtually harmless procedure and without them your pet is in danger of contracting severe diseases that can be picked up while on a daily walk or off your clothing. In mose cases, the animal doesn't even need to have contact with another animal to become infected with disease. Your veterinary staff can provide you with more information on the individual diseases which may affect your pet.

My dog never goes outside. Why should he be on Heartworm preventative medication?

Manitoba has one of the highest rates of infection for Heartworm disease in Canada. Heartworm disease can be fatal and is transmitted from by an infected mosquito. Even if your dog never goes outside, there are always mosquitoes that sneak inside your house! Heartworm disease is easily prevented by first having a simple blood test to make sure your pet is not infected. Then either a once-a-month pill, chew tablet or topical product can keep your pet protected throughout the season. Talk to your veterinarian about what is right for your pet.

I noticed a white wriggling string in my cat's litter box, what could this be?

It can be very common for cats and dogs to develop intestinal worms. Kittens or puppies can be infected with worms from their mother. Hunting mice, birds, rabbits, sharing a litterbox, or coming in contact with stool can all cause a cat or dog to become infected with worms. The most common intestinal worms are roundworm and tapeworm. They are easily treated with pills that can be obtained from your veterinarian.

Can I use human toothpaste on my dog or cat?

It is not a good idea to brush your pet's teeth with human toothpaste because some of the ingredients, such as baking soda, may upset their stomach. There are many different types and flavours of toothpaste made just for dogs and cats.
